Egypt Signals Readiness to Invoke Joint Defence Pact, Prepared to Take All Measures to Protect Sudan
Egypt and Sudan held the third round of consultations under the “2+2” mechanism for foreign and irrigation ministers in Cairo on Monday.
The Egyptian delegation was headed by Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aatty and Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, while the Sudanese delegation was led by Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem and Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Ismat Gurashi.
Cairo and Khartoum declared their unequivocal rejection of any threat to Sudan’s territorial unity and integrity. The Egyptian side affirmed that Egypt’s national security is directly and intrinsically linked to Sudan’s national security, in accordance with the existential principles set out in the Egyptian Presidency’s statement of 18 December 2025.
Egypt reiterated its full support for the Sudanese people and the country’s legitimate national institutions, foremost among them the Sudanese Armed Forces, which are constitutionally mandated to protect the country. It also declared its categorical rejection of the establishment or recognition of any parallel entities that undermine Sudan’s sovereignty.
In a strongly worded warning, Cairo affirmed its full readiness to take all measures and steps permitted under international law and authorised by the “Joint Defence Agreement” signed between the two countries, in order to provide unconditional support to Sudan and ensure that no red lines concerning its unity, territorial integrity or national institutions are crossed.
