Press Statement

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reviewed the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan on February 4, 2025, regarding the involvement of South Sudanese mercenaries in fighting within Sudan alongside the terrorist Janjaweed militia.
The Ministry notes that for the first time, its South Sudanese counterpart has admitted that such mercenaries are actually invloved in the war, after previously denying any knowledge of that. While the statement argued that the number of South Sudanese mercenaries does not reach 65% of the Militia and that the government has no control over them, it failed to condemn the crimes committed by these mercenaries or mention any efforts made to prevent their entry into Sudan. Nor did it merely caution its citizens against succumbing to the terrorist militia’s temptation to fight as mercenaries in Sudan. Needless to state that all laws and imperatives of good neighborly relations prohibit mercenarism.
In light of reports from United Nations Security Council experts, specialized organizations, and international investigative media, which have documented in details the support that the RSF militia obtains through South Sudan, there is no merit in the attempt by South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to downplay the significance of South Sudanese mercenaries’ involvement with the Janjaweed militia.
The statement resorted to exaggeration and sensationalization by a referring to “horrific massacres against South Sudanese citizens in Wad Madani”, a ploy that can only be interpreted as incitement to continue violence against Sudanese citizens in South Sudan.
More than 16 innocent Sudanese citizens have been killed, beside looting and burning businesses and properties owned by Sudanese in South Sudan, as a result of such false claims. Regettably, the statement conveniently ignored these heinous crimes against innocent civilians, who sought refuge in South Sudan due to the war waged against them by the RSF militia aided by South Sudanese mercenaries. Moreover, the statement disregarded the fact that more than two million South Sudanese citizens have remained in Sudan, even after South Sudan’s secession more than 14 years ago, and continue to receive the best treatment. Incidents against some individuals following the liberation of Wad Madani are currently under investigation at the highest judicial level. Conversly no similar move has been taken by the governmeng of South Sudan following the crimes committed against Sudanese citizens in the country.
It is unfortunate that this contradictory statement was issued at a time when Sudan had been making sincere efforts to assist in the realization of peace in South Sudan, despite the challenges it faces. This is exemplified in the peace agreement signed today in Port Sudan between the Government of South Sudan and the SPLM in Opposition (Kit Gwang Faction) under the patronage of the Director-General of the General Intelligence Service.
The Government of Sudan remains convinced that the security and peace of the two sister countries are interdependent, and as such, both leaderships continue to work towards strengthening and supporting this shared goal.
