IFJ: Sudan is the most dangerous country for journalists in Africa in 2024
Cairo: Sudanese Echoes
The Secretary-General of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Antonio Bellingue, pledged to provide protection for Sudanese journalists.
While announcing his unlimited support for the Sudanese Journalists Union, he promised to coordinate with the union to ensure the safety of journalists while performing their duties in Sudan.
Antonio said, in special statements to (Sudanese Echoes), that they are very concerned about the situation in Sudan, and continued, “Sudan is the most dangerous country for journalists in Africa in 2024.”
The Secretary-General of the International Federation of Journalists confirmed that Sudanese journalists face difficult conditions and find it difficult to practice their journalistic duties in Sudan, as they are exposed, as civilians, to violence during the war and its repercussions because they are performing their duty. He added, “This is something we categorically reject.”
Antonio concluded that the destruction of newspapers, satellite channels, and media outlets in Sudan by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Militia is a blatant violation and an attempt to silence and suppress freedom of expression. He explained that newspapers are the source from which citizens obtain news and information about the situation in their country, considering it a disaster.
He stressed the need to protect and ensure the safety of Sudanese journalists, describing what is happening in Sudan as the most dangerous in Africa.
