The death toll from a military plane crash in northern Omdurman has risen to 46 martyrs and about ten wounded.
An Antonov military plane crashed, on Tuesday night, in the 75th district of Al-Thawrah Popular Housing, minutes after taking off from Wadi Sayidna Military Base on its way to Portsudan due to a technical malfunction.
Eyewitnesses reported that the plane was flying at a very low altitude, making loud noises that terrified residents before it crashed on a number of houses in the crowded area.
A statement issued by the Khartoum State Government said, “After the completion of the rubble removal operations from the houses affected by the plane crash in the 75th district, and the completion of the final count, the number of martyrs reached 46 martyrs and ten wounded.”
The initial toll reported 19 dead and two children injured. The army did not officially reveal the identities of the officers who died in the incident, but media leaks confirmed the death of the commander of the Bahri Military Zone, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Bahr Ahmed Bahr, the well-known preacher Nassir Mukhtar, and several officers and volunteers.
Identical sources also announced the death of at least 9 civilians in the initial toll, who died as a result of the plane’s debris falling on homes. The Wali (governor) of Khartoum and a number of military commanders rushed to the site of the incident on Tuesday night, and supervised the recovery of bodies and the transfer of the injured to Al-Naw Hospital.
