Six Migrants Dead, 52 Rescued After Desert Ordeal in Libya
Six people have died in the Libyan desert, while 52 irregular migrants were rescued after enduring severe humanitarian conditions during a journey from Chadian territory.
The Libyan Anti-Illegal Migration Authority said patrols from Al-Wahat branch, in coordination with other security agencies, intercepted two vehicles carrying 52 migrants, including 49 Sudanese and three Chadians, who were travelling through dangerous desert routes from the Kouri Bougoudi area in Chad.
The authority said the migrants suffered from dehydration, exhaustion, and lack of supplies, and became lost in the desert, which led to the death of six people whose bodies were left at the site due to the difficulty of accessing the area.
It added that the public prosecutor’s office was informed and coordination is ongoing with the Libyan Red Crescent to locate and recover the bodies. The site is located about 300 kilometres southwest of Al-Wahat.
The authority warned of the dangers of irregular migration and the risks posed by human smuggling networks.
