1,307 New Cholera Cases Recorded in a Week

The Sudanese Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday the recording of 1,307 new cholera cases, including 18 deaths, within a week.

The number of people infected with the epidemic has decreased after a frightening increase in cases, particularly in Khartoum, as a result of emergency interventions implemented by the authorities with the support of United Nations agencies, including vaccination campaigns and improving water quality.

The Ministry of Health’s Emergency Operations Center said, in a statement, that “1,307 cholera cases, including 18 deaths, were recorded in 35 localities across 12 states within a week.”

It noted that Tawila Locality in North Darfur State recorded the highest number of cholera cases, with 519 cases, followed by two localities in Blue Nile Region, Geissan recorded 236 cases and Bau 108 cases.

The total number of cholera cases has risen to 91,034, including 2,302 deaths, recorded in 116 localities across 17 of Sudan’s 18 states.

The Emergency Center reported a decline in cholera cases, with the only 35 cases recorded in five localities in Khartoum State. It also announced the detection of eight measles cases in Khartoum and the Red Sea Governorates. It also revealed an increase in malaria cases.
