US Senate Presses Trump to Hold UAE Accountable and halt the War in Sudan

US Senators have urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to intensify US efforts to resolve the escalating conflict in Sudan, including appointing a new special envoy and holding those who fuel the conflict accountable.

In a letter to Rubio, Senators Mark Warner (D-VA), Todd Young (R-IN), Tim Kaine (D-VA), M. Michael Rounds (R-SD), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) underscored that US engagement is “more critical than ever” as the devastating war enters its third year.

The senators called on the Secretary of State to work with President Trump to appoint a special envoy for Sudan, a move they said is consistent with Congress’s intent expressed in the recently passed National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025. They pressed for the swift appointment of senior officials for Africa within the State Department and National Security Council, including an Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and ambassadors to key regional countries.

The letter stated, “As the devastating conflict in Sudan enters its third year, and with escalating violence and atrocities between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), U.S. intervention to resolve this conflict is more critical than ever. The lawmakers urged the administration to hold accountable the internal and external actors perpetuating the war.

They specifically cited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Russia, as well as foreign companies, allegedly ‘fueling the horrific atrocities.'”

The senators encouraged increased use of all available tools to hold accountable the external supporters of the conflict.
