United Nations warns of imminent floods in Sudan
The United Nations has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan as the rainy season approaches, with imminent floods that could hamper relief efforts and increase health Jeopardies, according to the This Morning website.
In a statement issued by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations expressed concern that the anticipated floods in Sudan, expected to continue until October, could block roads leading to the affected areas.
The statement emphasized that these floods could hinder the delivery of vital aid to millions of people, at a time when humanitarian organizations are facing a severe funding shortage, limiting their ability to pre-position supplies in preparation for the rainy season.
The report stated that last year’s floods affected approximately half a million people, warning that the number affected this year could be higher, especially with the ongoing waves of mass displacement resulting from the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The United Nations indicated that the armed conflict has displaced more than 12 million people since April 2023, exacerbating the fragility of the humanitarian situation in the country.
