Sudanese army takes control of a strategic area near the border triangle

Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minawi announced on Sunday that the army and its supporters from the joint force had taken control of the strategic Wadi al-Atroun area, located in the border triangle between Sudan, Libya, and Chad.

Last March, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) made significant progress in the Greater Sahara region by taking control of the Malha Locality in North Darfur State. The area had been controlled by the army and its armed movement allies due to its proximity to the border with Libya and the presence of an open supply line with northern and eastern Sudan.

“Our heroes in the armed forces and the joint forces are achieving great victories by liberating the strategic al-Atroun area from the grip of the terrorist Rapid Support Forces militia,” Minawi, who also oversees the joint force, said in a tweet on Twitter. He added, “We give good news to our people in Darfur region that victory is imminent, and soon we will celebrate in every street.”

The movement of the army and its supporters in the desert coincides with another movement in the Kordofan Region , with the aim to reach Darfur and end the siege of El-Fashir.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the joint force, Ahmed Hussein Mustafa, said that the liberation of “Wahat Al-Atroun” came after a precise and coordinated military operation carried out by the joint force in cooperation with the armed forces. He noted that the Rapid Support Forces suffered heavy losses in lives and equipment.

He considered the liberation of the town to be a decisive step towards restoring security and stability in Darfur Region and reflects their steadfast commitment to protecting civilians and securing Sudanese territory.
