Sudan Gold Mine Collapse Leaves 132 Dead and Injured

The death toll from the collapse of a gold mine in Sudan’s West Kordofan State has risen to 82, with 50 others injured, bringing the total number of dead and injured to 132.

A local official in West Kordofan said, “The death toll from the mine collapse has so far reached 82, while 50 people have been injured. An unknown number remain trapped under the rubble.” He noted that rescue operations were being carried out using “rudimentary means.”

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Al-Zara’a mine near the city of Al-Nohod in the state, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP). By Wednesday morning, rescuers had recovered 60 bodies, while a number of people remained missing and were feared to have died beneath the rubble.

One survivor, Khair-Al-Seed Joubara, said after joining fellow miners in rescue efforts that continued throughout the night: “We do not know how many people are still trapped inside.”
