More than 100 civilians mysteriously disappeared in Nyala in two months
Nyala is experiencing an unprecedented security collapse, with violations escalating sharply, including extrajudicial killings, systematic ransacking, extortion, and kidnappings for ransom, amid accusations of the involvement of senior officers in directing and organizing these crimes.
A merchant at El-Geneina market explained that militia soldiers extort traders and force them to pay huge bribes under the pretext of providing protection. He revealed that this situation has prompted major traders to flee to Chad, Libya, and South Sudan.
Despite the chaos and insecurity that pervade the city, they are more concentrated in two main markets: Gadira market, located southwest of the city and completely controlled by elements loyal to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to Badr-Eddin, everything is sold in this market, including weapons, ammunition, and drugs.
The market of (Al-Junaina Bus Station), which is controlled by traders from ethnic groups considered to be non-Arab tribes, who are subjected to constant extortion.
Consistent sources confirm that senior militia officers directly supervise the groups terrorizing civilians.
The sources mentioned specific names, including Colonel Showarba and Lt. Colonel Aliud, who was previously killed by a militia group while attempting to transport stolen money and cars. They also mentioned Lt. Colonel Ayina, who led a criminal group before being killed by a merchant with a hand grenade last March.
Groups specializing in kidnapping are active in Nyala, with more than 100 people reported missing under mysterious circumstances over the past two months.
The militia operates several detention centers in the city, most notably the Neem Forest and the former military intelligence building, where it detains dozens of civilians, traders, and employees, as well as retired army and police officers, under the pretext of spying for the army.
