Inmates Escape Prison in RSF-Controlled Area in Darfur
Residents of the Umm Dafuq area have called on the militia to re-arrest several people who escaped from the city’s prison in South Darfur, including seven suspects accused of murder.
The inmates of Umm Dafuq prison escaped last Thursday after breaking through the prison door.
Relatives of those killed by fugitives organized protests, demanding that the militia take action to re-arrest them.
Ali Ahmed, the brother of one of the victims, said they called on the Native Administration to arrest the fugitives so that the families would not resort to taking revenge on the families of the accused.
He added, “The Native Administration met on Friday at the Umm Dafuq Mosque and decided to detain ten relatives of the accused as a means of pressure to return the fugitives or pay blood money for the dead.”
He explained that the families of the accused agreed to surrender to the police to avoid any security tension in the area.
Security sources said the defendants, including seven murder suspects, managed to break out of prison and escape.
The sources indicated that this escape sparked security tensions in the area, amid accusations that the security forces colluded with the defendants.
