Gebriel Ibrahim: No Fear of Darfur Secession
The Head of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and Minister of Finance, Jibril Gebriel Ibrahim, has announced the government’s intention to lift the siege of El-Fashir, stressing that the city will remain steadfast. At the same time, he asserted that there were no fears of Darfur secession and pledged to fiercely resist any such attempt.
In an interview with Darfur Now, Gebriel downplayed the possibility of forming and announcing a parallel government to the militia in Nyala, stressing that the city is not safe and that the government’s hand would easily reach it.
He explained that the militia has failed to provide any form of services in the areas it controls, and therefore there is no point in talking about a government.
Gebriel said that no rational country would recognize the militia government, unveiling that the government has spoken with several international parties, who have expressed their rejection of this approach. He added, “Even if this government is announced, it will not affect the unity of Sudan. The Sudanese people are united emotionally and realize that this is a foreign project.”
In a related context, Gebriel sent a message to the residents of El-Fashir, saying, “We are doing everything we can to reach you, and all our energies are being expended to achieve this goal.”
Gebriel accused the militia of defying UN resolutions on El-Fashir, noting that it is confident that the international community will not act. He added, “We will not wait for the international community to act. We will fight this militia, and the solution lies in the will of our nation.”
