Gambling Sparks Tribal Fighting Among RSF militia in South Darfur

Local sources and eyewitnesses reported that 17 people were killed and others injured in a tribal fight in the town of Sania Delaiba, in Al-Salam Locality, South Darfur, due to a dispute over gambling.

Eyewitnesses told Darfur 24 that members of the Rizeigat tribe came from the Umm Daw Al-Ban area to the Sania Delaiba market last Thursday, where they engaged in a gambling game with a group of townspeople from the Tarjam tribe.

They indicated that the Tarjam members defeated the Rizeigat members in the game, seizing two cars, a motorcycle, and one camel.

They stated that the Rizeigat members demanded that the game be restarted, but the Tarjam members refused, leading to an armed clash between the two sides inside the Sania Delaiba market. Witnesses said the clash left 17 people dead and several others injured inside the market by stray bullets.

Seven of the injured were taken to Barakat Allah Hospital in Nyala, according to two sources who spoke to Darfur 24.

Witnesses reported that a group of Tarjam pursued the Rizeigat tribe as far as the Umm Daw al-Ban area, where they seized two vehicles, a motorcycle, and weapons from one of the villages, “nomad residence,” after their owners had fled.

Other sources said that the two sides reached a reconciliation agreement after a delegation of local leaderships and dignitaries from the Balabil area, led by the chieftain Mohamed Yagoub, arrived in the town of Saniya Delaiba on Saturday.

The areas of Al-Salam Locality, west and south of Nyala, the state capital, have witnessed security stability in recent times.
