Explosion Ends Life of Most Dangerous Janjaweed Commander
Burma Mahdi Esail, a prominent Commander in the Rapid Support Forces (RSFl, Janjaweed) militia, was killed when his personal weapon exploded in an incident described by local sources as surprising and controversial, especially since he was one of the most prominent Commanders of the so-called the “Sharp sword” movement, active in central and northern Darfur.
Burma was considered a symbol of the native administration supporting the militia and enjoyed widespread tribal influence in several areas of central Darfur. He was an influential political and tribal voice within the militia system, which relied on him for mobilization, recruitment, and popular propaganda.
According to sources, Esail died after his personal weapon suddenly exploded.
The circumstances of the incident have not yet been officially revealed.
Sources suggested that the incident was likely the result of a technical error while cleaning the weapon or an internal malfunction in his personal weapon. However, the possibility of an internal liquidation amid conflicting interests within the Janjaweed ranks has not been ruled out.
