Chad Threatens to Close Border with Sudan
The Chadian government has threatened to close its border with Sudan if sufficient international support is not provided to address the humanitarian and security challenges resulting from the refugee influx.
According to Chadian media, Chadian authorities held a high-level meeting in the capital, N’Djamena, to discuss the refugee situation.
The meeting was attended by Abdallah Sabir Fadl, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, representing the Prime Minister, along with Zahra Mohamed Issa, Minister of Social Affairs, government officials, and international and local partners.
Abdallah Sabir explained that Chad has received large numbers of refugees fleeing the ongoing war in Sudan and faces significant challenges that require an urgent international response.
The meeting highlighted the Chadian authorities’ concerns about escalating security tensions, especially in border areas, following recent incidents in the Kariari camp in the eastern state of Ennedi.
The meeting also discussed the need to resettle refugees and ensure they are not drawn into local or cross-border conflicts.
The government warned that the lack of sufficient resources could force it to close the border, which would have serious humanitarian consequences for thousands of refugees.
