Washington Designates Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Organization
The U.S. Department of State announced on Monday that the administration of President Donald Trump has added the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood to its specially designated global terrorist organizations list and intends to classify it as a foreign terrorist organization effective March 16.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the department said in a statement: “The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood employs excessive violence against civilians to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and to promote its extremist ideology.” The group was also accused of receiving support from Iran.
The designation will take effect within a week, following a January announcement in which the United States classified several other branches of the Muslim Brotherhood, including its Egyptian branch, as terrorist organizations.
