Guterres: Some States Fuel Sudan War, Hindering Lasting Political Solution
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said on Saturday that the UN is working with the African Union and other partners to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, aiming to build a civilian and democratic state.
Speaking to Al-Sharq’s correspondent at the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Guterres noted that “some countries are fueling the conflict in Sudan, making it difficult to reach a sustainable political solution.” He added that the belief of both warring parties in the possibility of a military victory further complicates and obstructs settlement efforts.
The UN chief also stressed that the UN Security Council will often take action against all those responsible for violations—not only in El-Fashir but across all regions of Sudan—upholding accountability and promoting justice.
