In 40 Days… 95 Children and Elderly Die of Starvation in El-Fashir

El-Fashir – Sudanese Echoes

The Coordination of Resistance Committees in El-Fashir has reported the death of 73 children under the age of five and 22 elderly people from starvation over a period of 40 days.

In a statement received by Sudanese Echoes, the coordination body said that reports from neighborhoods in northern El-Fashir, especially the Abu Shouk camp, indicate a catastrophic deterioration of humanitarian conditions in recent weeks.

The statement revealed that nearly 95 people—comprising young children under five and the elderly—died within just 40 days due to hunger, disease, lack of healthcare, absence of basic services, and deliberate shelling of residential areas and IDP camps by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The coordination body confirmed that corpses are scattered across streets and roads.

It added that most religious institutions (takayas) have stopped providing meals to displaced families due to limited funding and high prices. The cost of a single meal for 20 families has reached around 7 million Sudanese pounds—an amount far beyond the capacity of volunteers and local initiatives to cover.

The coordination committee warned that the takayas are no longer able to continue their humanitarian role under these soaring costs, putting hundreds of families who rely on them daily at risk.

With deep concern, the statement concluded: “People in northern El-Fashir are not only dying from hunger and shelling but also from neglect.”
