Minnawi Warns Against Leniency Toward Parallel Government in Nyala

Governor of Darfur Region Minni Arko Minnawi has warned against downplaying the dangers of the “parallel government” announced by the Ta’sis coalition in Nyala, describing it as an attempt to legitimize the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a post on X, Minnawi said what he called the “RSF government in Nyala” was nothing more than “political ablution,” stressing it was temporary and lacked legitimacy in the presence of the state. He added that if the state delayed its response, the responsibility would fall on the Sudanese government for failing to act in time despite having the tools to do so.

The Minawi remarks come as tensions escalate in Darfur, where the RSF recently declared through the Ta’sis coalition the formation of a parallel authority in Nyala, the region’s second-largest city.

Observers warn the move is part of RSF efforts to consolidate administrative and political control over Darfur, raising fears of deepening divisions and further undermining prospects for a peaceful settlement to the conflict that began in April 2023.
