Two Gold Miners Killed, Three Injured in Collapse of Abandoned Mine ‎in Al-Gadharef

GEDAREF, Sudanese Echoes — Two people were killed and three ‎others injured when an abandoned well at an artisanal gold mine ‎collapsed in Al-Gadharef State in eastern Sudan.‎

Collapses of gold-mining shafts have occurred repeatedly in recent ‎months across northern, eastern, and western Sudan. The latest major ‎incident before this occurred in September, when more than 60 ‎miners were killed in a mine collapse near the city of Al-Nohod in ‎West Kordofan State.‎

In a statement, the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company said that ‎two miners had died and three others were injured when an ‎abandoned shaft at Al-Shohadaa Mine in Al-Gadharef State collapsed ‎last Friday.‎

The company explained that available information indicated that the ‎victims had entered the shaft despite its closure by order of the local ‎authorities and police.‎
