Thousands of Sudanese gather in front of Ramses Station in Egypt to catch the train home to Sudan
Photos circulated on social media of thousands of Sudanese gathering in Ramses Square, in front of Cairo Station, Monday morning, to catch the train designated for their voluntary return to Sudan.
After the war subsided and the situation stabilized in Sudan following the Sudanese army’s control of most Sudanese states, Egypt announced assistance for Sudanese returning to their country.
The Egyptian Railway Authority announced the operation of a dedicated train to facilitate the voluntary return of Sudanese nationals and their families to their homeland on Monday, July 21, 2025.
The Authority has designated the operation of a special train, number 1940 (third class air-conditioned), from Cairo to Aswan on Monday. It departed Cairo Station at 11:00 a.m. and arrived at its final destination in the south at 11:00 p.m.
The Authority revealed that this initiative came within the framework of the humanitarian and societal role played by the Egyptian state, represented by the Ministry of Transport and the Egyptian National Railways Authority.
Lieutenant General Kamil El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, has instructed the Chairman and leaderships of the Railway Authority to “provide all necessary services for the comfort of our Sudanese brothers until their safe arrival at the High Dam River Port.”
