Exclusive: Sudanese Echoes

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef Al-Sharif disclosed new information about the Turkish mediation between the Sudanese government and the UAE. While he said that the coming days will witness practical steps to implement the mediation, he indicated that Turkey is intending to send envoys to the two countries to bring their viewpoints closer together, preceded by a visit by the Turkish Foreign Minister. Meanwhile, the minister hinted at a strong trend within the Sudanese government to appoint a new prime minister.

In an interview with the Sudanese Echoes platform – to be broadcast later – the minister linked Sudan’s return to activity in the African Union (AU) to the formation of a civilian government and the appointment of a prime minister, stating that “we sensed a trend from the leadership to appoint a prime minister.”

In the same direction, the minister revealed that Sudan’s relationship with all Gulf countries is very good, even excellent, except for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to its interference in Sudan inrernal issues by supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

Erdogan’s Mediation

Regarding the Turkish mediation, Minister Ali Youssef revealed that Turkish President Recep Erdogan phoned President Al-Burhan and the UAE leadership, demonstrating that the coming days will witness practical steps from the Turkish side. He acknowledged “Sudan stipulates that the UAE’s support for the militia be stopped as a condition for negotiations,” but this will not be achieved except through arduous negotiations. However, the minister said, “The battle now is the battle of dignity and the army that the people stand behind,” adding: “This is the line that is being taken now.”

UAE Gate

Sudan’s Foreign Minister stressed that the line and door of negotiation with the Emirates, whether through Turkey, Egypt or Saudi Arabia, must remain open, with all reservations in dealing with it. He denied that he had previously said that Sudan’s relations with the Emirates are good, as was rumored, “But if there is a line of diplomacy to stop the war, it must be followed,” he continued. “The battle in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not with tanks and missiles, but with negotiations that follow any line that supports and backs the military position.” He said
Ali Youssef explained that peace in Sudan must be achieved through two elements; one army in Sudan and a political path through a Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue without excluding anyone in order to establish the FUTURE STATE.

Concerning Sudan’s relationship with neighboring countries, the minister stressed that the only country that causes inconvenience to Sudan among neighboring countries is Chad.

New Chapter

With respect to the relationship with America and the West, Sudan’s Foreign Minister said that the government is now studying all the statements made by the new administration, stating that the old administration is uttering its last breath because it will hand over power to the new president next January. He stressed that the government will turn the page with the Trump administration and open a new chapter, asserting that there is a major change in the official American position towards what is happening in Sudan, partricularly in recent days, “America’s language is not the old one, it has turned into a positive language,” he said, explaining that America is moving towards classifying the RSF militia as a terrorist organization.

A De Facto Government

The minister clearly revealed that the West and America did not recognize the existence of a legitimate government in Sudan after October 25, 2021, and dealt with the Sudanese government as a de facto government. He explained that the Europeans treat Sudan as a country going through an abnormal situation, demonstrating this by Sudan nominating a number of ambassadors to European countries and no response came accepting them because of their opinion on the government.

Military Base

In respect to the Russian Base in Sudan, the Foreign Minister confirmed that it was agreed upon between Sudan and Russia since the days of Al-Bashir regime, explaining that Russia understands that ratification of it requires passing through Parliament under normal circumstances. “It must be understood that the Russian naval base is not colonialism,” he said. The Minister stressed the necessity to deal with the West on an equal footing. He confirmed that we will not reassure the West regarding the RUSSIAN BASE.

Apology

Concerning the relationship with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Minister made lifting the suspension of Sudan’s membership in IGAD conditional on IGAD officially apologizing to Sudan regarding previous decisions. He said that what happened from IGAD in the past is unfortunate.

Meanwhile, Ali Youssef revealed that the issue of Sudanese residency in Egypt and entry visas are files that have been occupying the Minister’s mind since he came to the Ministry and are raised and discussed in detail during any meeting he has with any Egyptian official. He expected an imminent resolution to the issue of residency, visas and study, stating that things are moving towards the better. He revealed that the Egyptian authorities have approved 40 Sudanese schools to operate, unveiling new facilities in granting visas to Sudanese citizens, mainly those residing in the Gulf States.

He explained that the same matter is being discussed with Saudi officials, pointing out that there are similar problems for the Sudanese there, particularly those who entered due to war conditions. He confirmed that the Saudi authorities promised to allow the Sudanese to study and pledged to facilitate work for them.
