Sudanese refugee found hanged in Uganda

This Wednesday morning, Sudanese refugee Abdullah Adam Ishag was found hanged in a neighborhood in the Ugandan city of Masindi.

The deceased, a resident of Cluster C in the Kiryandongo refugee camp, had sought refuge in Masindi to escape the escalating violence and psychological pressures resulting from recent attacks.

Members of the Sudanese refugee community in Masindi, in cooperation with the local police, responded to the scene, where a preliminary examination was conducted with the help of police dogs. The body was then transported to the hospital for an autopsy and investigation into the circumstances of the death.

The leadership office stated that an emergency meeting is currently being held with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Ugandan Office for Refugee Affairs (OPM) Protection Division to follow up on the incident and take the necessary official action.

The statement concluded with an expression of deep sorrow and grief, emphasizing that the community is mourning his loss and calling for enhanced protection for refugees in camps and neighboring towns.

The Kiryandongo refugee camp, located in Kiryandongo District in northwestern Uganda, is one of the largest refugee camps in the country, housing more than 100,000 refugees, including thousands of Sudanese who have fled the war raging in their country since April 2023.
