Sudanese MFA Denies Signing Agreement to Establish Russian Naval Base in Portsudan

In a press release Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has denied reports published in some media outlets regarding the signing of a Sudanese-Russian agreement yesterday, Monday, and fabricated statements attributed to the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stressing that the news is false and baseless.

Social media outlets had reported that Sudan and Russia signed a military cooperation agreement on Monday, including the establishment of a Russian naval base in Portsudan on the Red Sea. This came after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rejected the case filed by Sudan against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), accusing Abu Dhabi of supporting armed militias inside Sudan.

Sudan’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin Al-Fadil, confirmed, according to the fabricated report, that the signing of the agreement came at a sensitive time, reflecting Sudan’s strategic orientation to strengthen its international partnerships. He added, “We extend our hand to all those who respect our sovereignty and help protect Sudan’s national interests.”

Al-Fadil explained, according to the fabricated news, that the agreement with Moscow includes the establishment of a naval facility that will accommodate approximately 300 Russian soldiers and receive four warships, including nuclear vessels, in exchange for Russian military and technical support, including training, armament, and the transfer of expertise to the Sudanese Armed Forces.
