Sudanese Defense Minister in Juba

Sudanese Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Hassan Kabroun departed for Juba on Sunday to hold security and political talks with officials of the Government of South Sudan, in a mission that could bring the two countries closer together.

The Sudan News Agency (SUNA) said that the Sudanese Defense Minister left for Juba at the head of a government delegation to conduct security and political discussions with the Government of South Sudan.

The official agency said the Defense Minister’s visit to Juba comes as part of efforts to strengthen security and stability between the two countries and their brotherly peoples.

Sudan and South Sudan held talks at the foreign-ministerial level last year on issues related to oil transit and border crossings. Oil production in South Sudan was halted in March 2024 before gradually resuming in May 2025.

A South Sudanese official also visited Bashayer Oil Export Terminal in Port Sudan this year, affirming that the two countries were working to reach a joint arrangement for exporting South Sudan’s oil to international markets.

South Sudan produces approximately 100,000 barrels of oil per day. Production has declined in recent years due to security disturbances and armed attacks by opposition groups, negatively affecting the country’s economy.

Sudan and South Sudan are seeking to establish a sustainable relationship, while the war in Sudan continues to affect this trajectory, amid an implicit accusation from Khartoum that Juba has failed to take a decisive position toward the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
