Sudanese Army Conducts Wide-Ranging Sweep Operation in Qissan Near Ethiopian Border
The Sudanese Armed Forces announced on Tuesday the execution of a large-scale sweep operation in Qissan in the Blue Nile region in southeastern Sudan.
In a statement, the army said forces from the 13th Infantry Brigade of the Fourth Infantry Division carried out an extensive operation in the border locality adjacent to Ethiopia. Military sources told Sudan Tribune that the army and supporting units would continue pursuing “rebels” and expand sweeping operations toward the international border with Ethiopia.
The statement indicated that the operation covered areas extending beyond Abu Dagla and Ashambo, where government forces reportedly stormed Al-Bar, described as one of the strongholds of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N) faction led by Joseph Tuka, and established control over it.
Abu Dagla and Ashambo are located approximately one kilometre from the Ethiopian border.
The army added that insurgent elements were defeated during the operation, with weapons and military equipment seized and several fighters captured.
