Sudan to Open Air Bridge for Return of 10,000 Nationals from Uganda

Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim pledged to provide the necessary support and remove logistical impediments to ensure the voluntary return of Sudanese refugees from the Republic of Uganda, affirming that the stabilization of citizens in their home areas represents a top priority for the Sudanese government at this stage.

The remarks came during a meeting held Wednesday at his office with a delegation of the Higher Committee for Voluntary Return from Uganda, headed by Major General (Ret.) Abdul-Karim Yousif Yaqoub, in the presence of the Ministry Undersecretary of Planning Mohamed Bashar. The minister was briefed on the difficult humanitarian conditions facing Sudanese nationals there as a result of the war’s repercussions, and directed the immediate opening of communication channels with airlines and transport companies to arrange return flights.

For his part, Major General Abdul-Karim Yousif revealed that approximately 10,000 citizens have urgently expressed their desire to return home as a first phase, particularly in light of improved security conditions. He noted that air transport remains the primary challenge due to its high cost and the absence of viable alternatives.

During the meeting, Dr. Gebreil commended the humanitarian role of the Ugandan government in hosting Sudanese nationals and praised the committee’s efforts in registering and organizing those wishing to return. He also called on civil society organizations to contribute to what he described as a major national initiative aimed at ending the suffering of those stranded abroad.
