Sudan Health Ministry Announces Preventive Measures at Airports and Border Crossings to Contain Ebola

The Ministry of Health announced urgent precautionary measures to address the Ebola outbreak by tightening procedures at airports, border crossings, and entry points, alongside prior coordination with airlines operating between Sudan and countries affected by the virus.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda in East and Central Africa have reported Ebola cases this week, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which has also raised its alert level due to the deadly virus.

Director of Quarantine Al-Fateh Rabie Abdullah briefed a meeting on Sunday on ongoing preparedness efforts by the health authorities and response teams following the emergence of cases in neighbouring countries, according to a circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Health.

The meeting recommended a set of measures, including the provision of personal protective equipment for frontline staff and the urgent rollout of training programmes starting with quarantine personnel. It also called for the development of an emergency response plan across all operational sectors to be submitted to the General Directorate of Emergency and Epidemic Control for approval and funding.

The meeting further endorsed the adoption of a screening form, readiness of triage areas in Port Sudan and Khartoum for suspected and incoming travellers from affected countries, and the preparation of isolation centres in coordination with relevant states.
