Sudan, Egypt Agree to Repatriate Sudanese Refugees in Libya Through Sallum Border Crossing

Chairman of the Hope Committee for Voluntary Return in Egypt, Mohamed Wada’a, announced that the committee is working to reach an agreement with Egyptian authorities to repatriate Sudanese refugees currently in Libya through the Sallum border crossing directly to Sudan, without passing through Egyptian cities.

Speaking to Radio Dabanga’s Sudanese Files program, Wada’a said the committee would begin implementing the arrangement in the coming days.

He denied that the committee’s work had any political agenda or that it was involved in mobilizing returnees to join the armed conflict, stressing that the Hope Committee is a purely popular entity with no affiliation to any political groups. He also explained that the committee’s funding relies entirely on donations deposited into a designated account at the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo and is subject to thorough review by the Auditor General.

Meanwhile, Wada’a revealed that the committee has so far facilitated the return of 35,000 Sudanese citizens from Egypt to Sudan, including people detained during campaigns against irregular residency as well as patients. He added that efforts are currently underway, in coordination with the Zakat Chamber, to secure the release of indebted Sudanese nationals held in Egyptian prisons.
