Storms Hit El-Obeid… Collapse of Homes and Destruction

El-Obeid, the capital of Sudan’s North Kordofan State, woke up on Monday to a scene of devastation and vandalization after heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, struck late Sunday evening.

The storms caused the collapse of dozens of homes and roofs in various neighborhoods, including Blocks 13, 16, and 17 in the Karima North neighborhood, according to local authorities.

One person died after a room collapsed on him, while others were rescued after being pulled from the rubble at dawn.

The damage also extended to infrastructure, as the collapse of the North Kordofan Radio broadcast tower caused transmission to be cut off at all FM stations in the state, while the eastern hall of the Sheikan Museum sustained varying degrees of damage.

Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and provide aid to those affected, amid community calls for solidarity with the families who lost their homes.
