Shock for Citizens as Sudan Electricity Company Sets Next Sunday as Tentative Date for Resumption of Merowe Dam Power

Sudan Electricity Holding Company expects maintenance work at the Merowe Dam Power Generation Station to be completed and electricity service to resume gradually next Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, following the arrival of the required equipment and spare parts from China and the commencement of installation and technical inspection by engineering teams.

In its Press Statement No. (5), the company said the process would begin with the restoration of the Merowe–Al-Markhiyat transmission line, which it described as being of paramount strategic importance. This will constitute a crucial first step toward restoring power supplies to Khartoum, River Nile and Red Sea states, while intensive efforts will continue to restore the remaining transmission lines successively.

The statement said the proposed date remains contingent on progress in field operations and the successful completion of final technical tests.

A fire of unknown cause—which prompted the formation of an investigation committee—broke out on Aug. 1 in cables and feeders at the Merowe Dam Power Station, resulting in the complete shutdown of the station and causing a widespread blackout across the capital and several vital states.

The company denied reports circulating that maintenance had been completed and that electricity had fully returned, stressing that the serious damage to the station’s cables requires the highest degree of precision, rigorous testing and the implementation of all necessary safety measures before final operation.

Meanwhile, the statement revealed that distribution networks in other states had experienced some separate faults due to natural conditions and weather fluctuations, resulting in power fluctuations on some transmission lines. It affirmed that technical teams are currently working around the clock to restore stability to all affected areas.
