Seven civilians, including a policeman, killed and injured in fireworks warehouse explosion in Omdurman
A fire broke out early Saturday morning in a fireworks and stationery warehouse in Al-Thawra- District 4th, Karari Locality, inducing explosions caused by fireworks.
The Wali (governor) of Khartoum State, Ahmed Osman Hamza, attended the incident on Saturday, in the presence of Lt. Gen. (Police) Ibrahim Shamin, Director of the General Directorate of Administrative Affairs, and Maj. Gen.
(Police) Khalid Hamdna-Allah, Director of Karari Locality Police.
Civil Defense forces, through the Rapid Intervention Unit, rushed to extinguish the fire, which resulted in the death of a Civil Defense member and a woman, and five injured civilians and Civil Defense personnel.
The injured were taken to Al-Naw Hospital for treatment.
Maj. Gen. (Police) Dr. Al-Matari Ahmed, Director of Civil Defense in Khartoum State, explained that the fire lasted for three hours in a residential apartment containing stationery and fireworks that had been stored two days earlier without the knowledge of Civil Defense authorities and neighbors.
The forces contained the fire quickly, and Maj. Gen. Al-Matari sent a message to residents of the neighborhoods not to allow storage of fireworks within their neighborhoods without the knowledge of the competent authorities. He stated that such a phenomenon poses a danger to the lives of innocent citizens.
The Wali of Khartoum State and his accompanying delegation offered their condolences to the families of the victims and inspected the site of the accident and the precautionary measures taken by the Civil Defense Forces to secure the situation.
