Reported Collapse of Militia Supply System in Nyala and Unprecedented Mass Desertions

Nyala — Sudanese Echoes

Local sources in the city of Nyala, South Darfur State, report a severe and unprecedented deterioration in the living conditions of fighters affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia stationed in Al-Wadi district.

According to multiple corroborating field reports, the militia’s food supply system has reached a state of near-total collapse, with shortages in basic meals and ration supplies exceeding 80 percent over the past two weeks.

Sources say the absence of logistical support has triggered disorder and chaos among armed groups, with fighters seeking food through irregular and violent means. More than 12 incidents of assault and infiltration have reportedly been recorded, involving hungry soldiers targeting local markets and social gatherings in search of ready meals — raising fears of direct threats to the already fragile food security of civilians.

Witnesses cited widespread frustration among rank-and-file fighters, who have issued repeated distress calls to their field commanders requesting minimum levels of food and medicine.

Reports further indicate that hunger — combined with the spread of infectious diseases inside encampments — has sharply undermined morale and led to individual and group desertions at levels described as unprecedented since the beginning of the current year, with some fighters fleeing what they characterized as “certain death” due to starvation.

Sources add that militia elements in Nyala are experiencing acute logistical isolation due to disrupted supply chains, alongside what they describe as complete disregard by senior leadership for repeated appeals. Observers warn that the situation could lead to internal fractures within militia ranks or a rise in violations and looting targeting shops and civilian property around Al-Wadi district, as fighters attempt to survive amid the lack of regular rations.
