Pre-Emptive Strikes: Warplanes Disperse Militia Forces Advancing Toward Al-Obeid
Sudanese military aircraft on Saturday carried out airstrikes on Rapid Support Forces (RSF) positions around the town of Bara in North Kordofan State.
Military sources told Ultra Sudan that military drones targeted troop concentrations on Saturday morning, destroying around 20 fully equipped combat vehicles and killing and wounding dozens of RSF fighters, according to preliminary estimates.
The sources said the strikes were aimed at dispersing a force that had been mobilizing for days in preparation for an attack on Al-Obeid.
They added that the Sudanese Armed Forces subsequently conducted extensive sweep operations along the northern and western axes of Al-Obeid following the airstrikes on RSF positions, stressing the army’s readiness, along with allied forces, to repel any militia advance toward the city.
Bara lies about 57 kilometres north of Al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, and approximately 285 kilometres from Khartoum. It is situated on the export route linking Darfur, Kordofan and Khartoum. The RSF militia has controlled the town for months, while the army has sought to maintain positions around it to prevent any advance toward Al-Obeid, which is regarded as the military’s last defensive line in Greater Kordofan.
The bombardment comes amid a military escalation that has seen Al-Obeid come under drone attacks for a ninth consecutive day, heightening humanitarian concerns in the city, which is sheltering hundreds of thousands of displaced people who fled Darfur and Kordofan.
