Minawi to UN Envoy: Sudan’s Future Is Too Important for a Two-Sided Deal

Governor of Darfur Region Mini Arko Minawi on Saturday discussed developments in the security, humanitarian and political situations in Sudan and Darfur during a meeting in Khartoum with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto.

The meeting focused on the need to address the root causes of the crisis and create conditions for achieving a just and sustainable peace that preserves Sudan’s unity and sovereignty. It also addressed facilitating humanitarian access, protecting civilians, and issues related to delivering Sudanese Certificate examinations to refugee students in Chad.

Minawi affirmed that dialogue represents the best way to end the war, provided that it is an inclusive Sudanese process that excludes no stakeholders and is not imposed from abroad. He stressed the need to unify efforts and support a Sudanese solution to the crisis.

He pointed out that peace in Darfur in particular, and Sudan in general, requires addressing displacement, justice, citizenship, development and reconstruction issues. He affirmed Sudan’s openness to any sincere international effort that supports peace and stability, while stressing that the final solution must be Sudanese and preserve the will of the Sudanese people, as well as the country’s unity and sovereignty.
