IOM: Number of people fleeing El-Fashir rises to more than one million

The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) disclosed on Sunday that the number of people displaced from El-Fashir in North Darfur state has risen to more than one million.

The militia launched attacks on most villages and areas around El- Fashir starting in May 2024, as part of its violent attempts to seize control of the city. These attacks included the destruction of water sources, sieges, and violations.

The IOM said, in a statement received by Sudan Tribune, that 1,014,748 people have been displaced from El-Fashir Locality, representing more than 10% of the total internally displaced population (IDP) in Sudan.

It pointed out that the number of those who fled El-Fashir and Zamzam camp has reached 718,998 people, equivalent to 155,602 families.

IOM unveiled that 99% of the population of Zamzam camp, located 12 kilometers southwest of El-Fashir, has been displaced.

A total of 498,955 people have been displaced, including 436,685 who fled to 26 locations in four states. The organization stated that 75% of the displaced from Zamzam camp moved to Tawila, which is under the control of the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul-Wahid Al-Nur, while 10% fled to El- Fashir, while the rest sought refuge in Chad.
