IMF “Roadmap” for Sudan’s Debt Relief
Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris reviewed the progress made in the State’s public financial management reform program and the policies recently adopted by the Ministry of Finance, including its policy of revitalizing productive sectors. These efforts cover the national maritime and air carriers, including Sudan Airways (“Sudanair”), as well as other productive sectors such as livestock.
State Minister for Finance Adviser Mohamed Nour Abdeldaim said in a press statement following his meeting with the Prime Minister that he provided a comprehensive briefing on public financial management reform, including the reform and design of the procurement and contracting system, the electronic tendering platform, the initiation of payroll digitization, the application of international accounting standards in national institutions, the implementation of transparency and governance programs, the strengthening of government financial reporting, and the unified treasury system.
The state minister for Finance explained that the meeting also discussed the Ministry’s efforts to mobilize international support from international organizations, as well as the roadmap agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Sudan’s debt relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative.
The meeting further addressed efforts to restore strong relations with the World Bank and strengthen its contribution to supporting productive sectors and humanitarian assistance. In this regard, he noted Sudan’s participation with the World Bank in developing the agricultural sector strategy and the country’s reconstruction strategy.
The state minister for Finance added that the meeting also discussed the Ministry of Finance’s strategic plans, the upcoming national budget, and efforts to secure additional debt relief beyond the HIPC Initiative.
