EU Rejects Parallel Authority in Sudan as Al-Burhan Stresses Political Process Is a Sudanese Matter

President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, briefed European Union (EU) ambassadors accredited to Sudan on the latest humanitarian and security developments in the country during a meeting in Khartoum attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mohi-Eddin Salim.

Al-Burhan provided an overview of the war launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against the state and its institutions, highlighting violations and atrocities committed against civilians. He reiterated the need to halt continued external support for the militia.

The TSC President stressed that Sudan is a nation with a long-standing civilization and that its people possess the experience and capacity to address their own challenges. He affirmed that the political process is a purely Sudanese matter that must take place inside Sudan and be driven by the will of the Sudanese people, while welcoming any positive support that advances peace, stability, and development and respects the country’s sovereignty.

Speaking to the press, European Union Ambassador to Sudan Wolfram Vetter said the meeting was aimed at gaining a clearer understanding of conditions in Sudan and hearing directly from Sudanese stakeholders about the suffering and hardships caused by the war.

He said the engagement forms part of the European Union’s efforts to work with Sudanese parties to help find an urgent solution to the crisis and support an independent democratic civilian transition.

Vetter also reaffirmed the European Union’s rejection of any parallel governing structures in Sudan and called for an end to the illicit flow of weapons into the country, as well as measures to prevent the entry of mercenaries and foreign fighters.
