Energy Ministry Apologises for Power Outages, Urges Citizens to Rationalise Consumption

The Ministry of Energy announced a package of urgent measures and plans to rehabilitate the country’s electricity system, affirming that the sector is facing highly complex operational and exceptional conditions due to the extensive destruction inflicted on generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure as a result of systematic targeting of vital facilities.

In a press statement, the ministry explained that the decline in thermal power generation to unprecedented levels is directly linked to the scale of damage sustained by the national grid, forcing authorities to rely primarily on hydroelectric generation to meet peak demand during the current summer season.

The ministry revealed that engineering teams are carrying out intensive efforts under an integrated plan aimed at stabilising electricity supply, including accelerating work to bring new generation units online at the Garri 1 and Garri 4 power stations during the coming phase.

The plan also includes increasing hydroelectric generation capacity alongside the introduction of thermal units to gradually reduce outage hours, intensifying maintenance operations in the thermal generation sector — particularly at Om Dabakir and the Garri complex — while securing fuel supply lines.
It further includes rebuilding damaged transmission and distribution lines, substations, and control centres.

In a related context, the ministry affirmed that efforts are continuing to overcome global supply chain obstacles and rising procurement costs, noting that work is underway to import and locally manufacture power and distribution transformers.

The ministry also announced parallel arrangements to address shortages of electricity meters through two tracks involving local manufacturing and direct imports.

The statement stressed that the highest priority is currently focused on ensuring electricity supply to facilities directly linked to citizens’ daily lives, particularly water pumping stations, hospitals, educational institutions, and other service facilities, in addition to launching solar energy projects at strategic sites.

At the strategic level, the ministry noted that it is proceeding with renewable energy projects, expanding regional electricity interconnection networks, and strengthening partnerships with friendly countries and companies to rebuild and develop the sector.

The ministry concluded its statement by urging citizens to rationalise electricity consumption, preserve the integrity of the national grid, and cooperate with authorities in curbing illegal connections to help ensure service stability.
