“Economic War Room” to Rescue Sudanese Pound: Kamil Idris Launches National Economic Management Committee
Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris launched the National Economic Management Committee in Khartoum in the presence of ministers from the economic sector, the Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, the Secretary-General of the Tax Chamber, the Directors of Customs, Standards, the Central Bureau, the Capital Markets Authority, and representatives of several other relevant institutions.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of the committee’s work in managing the economy under the exceptional circumstances facing the country. The meeting approved the committee’s mandate, responsibilities, and operational framework for the coming period.
The committee aims to preserve macroeconomic stability by curbing inflation, stabilizing the exchange rate, accelerating sustainable economic growth, raising national productivity, strengthening productive sectors, increasing domestic production, boosting exports and foreign exchange earnings, enhancing investor confidence and private sector competitiveness, supporting food security, and promoting balanced and sustainable development.
The National Economic Management Committee will serve as an executive decision-making body, with a mandate covering fiscal and monetary policy, production, trade, the external sector, investment, employment, food security, energy, digital transformation, and related structural reforms.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of coordinating national efforts in managing the economy and agreed to hold regular committee meetings.
Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Information, Tourism and Antiquities Dr. Graham Abdel-Gadir said the committee is tasked with addressing Sudan’s economic challenges and that its role complements, rather than overlaps with, the work of the economic sector within the Cabinet’s institutional framework.
