Discussions to Regularize the Status of 30,000 Syrians in Sudan

A technical delegation from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs discussed with Sudanese officials on Monday the conditions of Syrians residing in Sudan and ways to settle their legal status, in addition to strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated via its Telegram channel that the delegation held a “constructive” working session with the Director of the General Directorate of Passports and Immigration in Sudan, Maj. Gen. (Police), Osman Muhammad al-Hassan Dinkawi, in the presence of a number of senior Sudanese officials.

The Sudanese side expressed full cooperation in addressing the issues of the Syrian community.

The two sides underscored the depth of relations between the two countries and brotherly peoples and agreed to work together to strengthen these relations and overcome the obstacles facing Syrians in Sudan.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Syrian Transitional Government, Asaad al-Shaibani, announced last May that Damascus would send a special team to Sudan to inspect the conditions of its citizens there, provide them with the necessary support, and work to ensure their safe evacuation when necessary.

The number of Syrians in Sudan is estimated at around 30,000, most of them in the eastern city of Port Sudan, where they face difficult humanitarian conditions, including food and medicine shortages and difficulties to leave the country, amid ongoing security tensions and attacks in the region.
