Berlin Hosts International Conference to Mobilize Over $1 Billion for Sudan

The third international conference on Sudan opened in Berlin on Wednesday, with German officials expressing hopes of mobilizing more than $1 billion in support, amid mounting international calls to unite efforts to end what has been described as a “catastrophic humanitarian crisis” caused by the ongoing war.

The conference brings together donor countries, humanitarian and United Nations organizations, as well as governments, in a bid to address the conflict that has gripped Sudan for over three years. Notably, neither the Sudanese Armed Forces nor the Rapid Support Forces are participating in the event.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated: “We want to surpass what was achieved at last year’s conference in London, which raised one billion dollars.”

Wadephul expressed optimism about meeting the target, noting that pledges are still coming in. He stressed that despite global diplomatic attention being focused on Ukraine and Iran, “this major humanitarian catastrophe in Africa must not be forgotten.”
