The renowned Islamic thinker, Dr. Al-Mahboub Abdel-Salam, has asserted that political Islam has exhausted its purposes, emphasizing the need for a new ideology.

At the same time, Al-Mahboub described the 1989 Salvation Movement coup as like eating pork, asserting that the coup was a grave mistake.

In an interview with the program “What Was Not Said” on the Sudanese Echoes platform, presented by Salah Omar Al-Sheikh, Al-Mahboub said that South Sudan seceded due to the September Laws under President Nimeiri.

In the same context, Al-Mahboub acknowledged that Sudan’s political elites are addicted to divisions and are rushing to seize power. He described this rush to seize power as a disease afflicting the Sudanese elites, explaining that most politicians cannot tolerate gradual public action.

He pointed out that the causes of disagreements between parties, both within them and with others, are due to jealousy and envy.

Al-Mahboub cited the example of Republican Party leader Mahmoud Mohamed Taha, who he said could have become, had it not been for the Sudanese environment, a social reformer like Imam Mohamed Abdo.

Regarding the Salvation Coup, Al-Mahboub said that the Islamic Movement’s organs believed in power as an alternative to Islam. He admitted that Turabi supported them due to pressure, asserting that the coup was a grave mistake, as Turabi stated, “like eating pork.”

Al-Mahboub explained that the Islamic Movement was supposed to atone for the sin quickly, but they did not.
