African Union Launches New Initiative to Resume Sudanese-Sudanese Dialogue
Addis Ababa — Sudanese Echoes
An African Union official revealed ongoing preparations to restart dialogue among Sudan’s political forces and address the humanitarian crisis.
The African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) had postponed the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, originally scheduled in Djibouti in December, indefinitely due to deep divisions over participating parties and the methodology of the talks.
The official told Sudan Tribune, on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary African Summit hosted in Addis Ababa, that arrangements are currently underway to hold a new round of dialogue, including contacts with political forces following the conclusion of the summit of heads of state and government.
He added that there are significant developments in the file — without disclosing details — stating: “We are now, after the conclusion of the current summit, conducting intensive contacts with political forces to resume the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue.”
In the same context, other sources told Sudan Tribune that a new approach is being led by the current AU Chairperson, President Evariste Ndayishimiye, concerning Sudan. Sources indicated that the key elements of this initiative include the immediate establishment of a humanitarian truce, leading to a comprehensive ceasefire and the launch of an inclusive Sudanese dialogue.
