Addis Ababa Government Uses Janjaweed Forces in Offensive Against Tigray

Local sources in Ethiopia’s Tigray region said that members of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia took part alongside the Ethiopian federal army in the latest military offensive targeting wide areas in the western part of the region.

The sources said the Ethiopian army, backed by RSF fighters, suffered heavy losses in personnel and military equipment on the Sherori front, while the attacking forces failed to achieve any significant territorial gains after encountering fierce resistance from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Field reports also indicated a notable shift in combat tactics, stating that the TPLF made extensive use of drones to repel the offensive on the western fronts, including areas surrounding Sheraro, amid continuing exchanges of accusations between government forces and the TPLF over responsibility for the military escalation.

On the humanitarian front, the fighting near the Sudan–Ethiopia border triggered a new wave of displacement. Sudanese security and medical sources told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that hundreds of Ethiopian civilians fleeing the Tigray region crossed into Sudan over the past 48 hours, signaling growing humanitarian consequences of the escalating conflict.
