Hundreds Killed, Including Foreign Mercenaries, as Sudanese Warplanes Destroy RSF Camp in Nyala
Sudanese Armed Forces warplanes launched heavy airstrikes against positions belonging to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in several parts of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State in southwestern Sudan.
Military sources told Ultra Sudan that the Sudanese army carried out heavy airstrikes late Monday, targeting RSF troop concentrations at several locations, including the Domaya camp west of the city, the former headquarters of the army’s 16th Infantry Division, and other sites near Nyala University.
The two sources said the airstrikes killed dozens of people, including field commanders who had been overseeing the nighttime deployment of troops from the camp to combat fronts, as well as foreign fighters. The sources added that the strikes followed an intelligence operation to monitor the forces’ movements.
Eyewitnesses inside Nyala told Ultra Sudan that they heard powerful explosions in several neighborhoods but could not immediately determine the extent of the casualties. They confirmed that the militia had carried out widespread arrests of civilians, mostly young men, accusing them of spying for the army.
This was the fifth bombardment of Nyala this week. Over the past week, the Sudanese army has intensified its air operations against the city in an unprecedented escalation. Military sources say the intensified air campaign in Darfur and Kordofan aims to strip the militia of its defensive and offensive capabilities ahead of a ground offensive.
The airstrikes have reportedly destroyed the militia’s command-and-control headquarters and the headquarters of its civilian administration. They have also targeted the homes of militia commanders and air-defense systems around Nyala International Airport.
A local source told Sudan Tribune that at least 20 people were killed and dozens injured in an airstrike that hit two locations in Nyala, South Darfur State, on Monday evening.
The source said one of the strikes targeted the Tanjuq Station night market in the Domaya area, a crowded market frequented by civilians, where militia recruits were also present. The attack caused heavy casualties.
Activists affiliated with the militia circulated videos on social media showing the bodies of large numbers of its fighters who were killed when a drone struck their gathering in the town of Domaya in Nyala.
Eyewitnesses said the intense drone strikes also targeted the former headquarters of the 16th Infantry Division and nearby sites, as well as homes belonging to militia commanders in Al-Nahda, Al-Riyadh, and Al-Matar (Airport) neighborhoods. They added that the attack also hit the Mousiya student housing complex affiliated with Nyala University.
