Violence Sweeps Ireland Following Allegations Against Sudanese Refugee; Embassy Issues Statement

The Sudanese Embassy in London strongly condemned the horrific stabbing incident that took place in Belfast, in which reports indicate that a Sudanese national has been identified as a suspect.

Police in Northern Ireland arrested a young man believed to be Sudanese on suspicion of attempted murder of a 42-year-old Irish man last Monday. Following the incident, tensions erupted in parts of Ireland amid calls from anti-refugee groups to hold demonstrations against refugees.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the embassy expressed its sympathy and condolences to the victim and his family, wishing him a speedy and full recovery. It also extended condolences to all those affected by the tragic incident and the subsequent tensions in Belfast.

The statement added: “The embassy is closely monitoring developments and is working to communicate with the relevant authorities to support the ongoing investigation and share any available information regarding the suspect.”

The embassy stressed that the actions of any individual should not be attributed to an entire community, noting that the Sudanese community in the United Kingdom has a long and distinguished record of positive contributions to British society, including the National Health Service, academia, business, and many other sectors.

It further stated: “We are deeply grateful for the hospitality and support provided by the Government and people of the United Kingdom to Sudanese citizens during the difficult circumstances currently facing Sudan.”

The statement concluded: “The embassy joins and supports calls for restraint, calm, and wisdom issued by political, religious, and community leaders in the aftermath of this brutal attack.”
