UN Envoy Briefs Al-Burhan on Addis Ababa Consultations to Resolve Sudan Crisis
The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on Sunday with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salim. The meeting focused on ongoing efforts to achieve peace in Sudan.
Speaking to reporters following the talks, Haavisto said the visit marked his second trip to Sudan since assuming his duties in March 2026. He noted that during the past months he had conducted intensive regional consultations involving heads of state and government, a broad spectrum of Sudanese political actors, and representatives of civil forces.
He said the consultations largely centered on the aspirations of the Sudanese people regarding the future of their country, adding that his efforts are aimed at encouraging de-escalation measures that reduce tensions and build confidence among the parties.
Haavisto stated that he discussed practical steps to help create an environment conducive to peace in Sudan.
The UN envoy also briefed the TSC President on the work of the quintet mechanism comprising the African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), League of Arab States, United Nations, and the European Union.
He highlighted progress made during consultations organized by the mechanism, which recently concluded in Addis Ababa and brought together Sudanese stakeholders to discuss ways of launching an inclusive national dialogue.
Haavisto stressed that the political process “will belong to the Sudanese,” adding that he requested support from the TSC President for efforts aimed at fulfilling the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
He reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.
“As the personal envoy of the Secretary-General, I remain committed to engaging with all Sudanese partners in order to advance both the security and political tracks toward resolving differences, reaching consensus, and helping build a shared vision for a Sudan of peace and prosperity,” Haavisto said.
Haavisto added that through his regular meetings in Khartoum and across the region, he would continue exerting every possible effort to support initiatives aimed at reaching a sustainable resolution to the conflict in Sudan.
