World Food Programme Resumes Crop Purchases in Sudan’s Al-Gadarif State
The World Food Programme (WFP) has resumed direct purchasing operations from the crop market in Sudan’s Al-Gadarif State, triggering significant commercial activity and a sharp rise in sorghum prices across the state’s agricultural commodity exchange.
The renewed entry of the UN agency into local procurement led to increased daily inflows to the markets. The exchange recorded the arrival of 6,829 sacks of sorghum, 1,528 sacks of millet, 578 sacks of sesame, and 856 sacks of watermelon seeds (tasali), amid strong demand from traders and importers.
The development comes as agricultural markets in eastern Sudan continue to experience volatility driven by shifting supply conditions and renewed institutional purchasing activity.
The World Food Programme has not issued an additional public statement on the latest market movements.
